I am NOT my hair
I know! uhm mmm yup the India Arie song just came to mind by the title of this post, right?
Well great, because today we are talking about hair.
We aren't just speaking about any hair either we going to be speaking about natural hair particularly.
I was inspired to go natural by my cousin who probably didn't even know this.
But I hope they will see this post.
Anyway, there were a few more celebrates walking with their natural hair.
Amandla Stenberg in The Hunger Games
Quvenzhané Wallis in Annie
Sanaa Lathan in Nappily Ever After
May 2020, I've just gotten out of a relationship, and by this time I have been throwing around that I had every intention of going natural.
My mom was my hairdresser chopping off my relaxed hair. I made sure to skip the opportunity to Brazilian my hair.
I fell in love with my TWA, styling it wasn't too difficult in fact I enjoyed my hair more.
The time experimenting with my hair came in full throttle.
It was fun and exciting to put my hands to work and successfully create a style. But it doesn't mean I didn't have days where I had no clue what to do with it or am in the mood to do anything with it. I am what you would call a lazy natural that spends just enough time on her hair where it looks stylish. Shampoo, condition I will deep condition my hair every second or third week depending on the amount of manipulation I've done on my hair. I would rarely have used a leave-in conditioner, gel, or butter in my hair in the early days.
I have become more open to the idea of Shea butter and a leave-in conditioner for a twist out and gel to do a slick back bun.
When I sing the song Video, By India Arie ... "Sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don't. Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I won't.."
It took me a while to love my 4c hair.
There were days when I hated it, cursed it wishing it was not as coily and tight.
The shrinkage didn't help either but I had learned ways to work around it.
I was confronted with the fact that my head of hair is what God had given me.
And it is good.
It does not take away the feelings and emotions that rock through me during the nightmarish moments when my luscious hair doesn't want to cooperate.
Here are a few styles that I have tried on this journey.
And for this very first time, I succeeded in a slick back bun. Which I was very proud of.
I know that there is room for improvement, growing in love with my hair but for the time being I am going to enjoy the changes I see in my hair, watching it flourish and help her grow in any way possible.
