You should have had it figured out

I'm sure you have heard something along the lines of "You should have had it figured out by now" or "Shouldn't you have been...?". If I could count how many times I have been told this, I would have no fingers nor toes.

Two weeks before my 25th birthday, my mother sang the very same tune "I'm only saying, you should have been in a steady career, have a steady boyfriend maybe even been engaged...". My heart grew anxious as my mother continued "you could have been earning good money if you studied...." I new if I didn't speak up I would believe the stereotypical way of thinking. "No where in the law does it say I need to have my life figured out. I am only 24, I still have time. What did Aunt Kay say: you don't need to worry about me. I'm special in the Lord's eyes" I said smartly. "Beside no one's journey looks the same. It's pointless worrying about what if's and should have's" my mother sighed in defeat probably wondering what she was going to do with me.

As a child when we were asked "What do you want to become" one thinks about becoming a doctor, teacher or a famous super stars and as we grow older the lines blur for some of us. We matriculate from school with no clue,no expectations about the future. For those who instantly new what they wanted out of life and actually love it, I take my hat off for. But for those who haven't and people are questioning you. You are not in competition with anyone and your journey is not a race. Our lives are not measure by accomplishments but by how we live and who we are. It's made up of moments that develops and pushes us to grow from the inside out. I firmly believe that God has given all of us an assigned task on this earth and as we dive deeper into our purpose, finding our identity in the Father who created us. The steps that seems wrong or stupid to other are perfect in His eyes. There is nothing ordinary about how God works. Know in your heart that whatever the plan may be, that it will be good. A few things to bare in mind

  • No one actually knows what they're doing

  • Its okay not to have it together

  • You are exactly where you need to be

  • If you fail be brave enough to get back up

  • Take it one challenge at a time

  • Trust God's plan

"For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper and not harm you, plans to give hope and a future" ~ Jeremiah 29:11
